BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

Government College Ibadan (GCI) is a foremost and prestigious Secondary school for boys, renowned for academic excellence, character building, a rich and diverse extra-curricular activities and sports development.

It was established on the 28th of February, 1929 by Government as a model school and conceived as a boarding school. It is served by a huge expanse of land, possibly the biggest in the nation, featuring the school administrative block, classrooms, sports fields, student dormitories, orchard, staff quarters and old boys complex.

Prominent features of the school are some scattered rocks, and the school is said to be built on the rock. The school location is in Apata ganga, (Apata for short) in Ibadan. Apata ganga in Yoruba is massive rock.

The School Motto is: Learning to Serve.

Three school units led by a single Board co-exist on the campus. They are Junior Secondary School I, Junior Secondary School II and Senior Secondary School. Each is led by a Principal, but the overriding head is the Principal of the Senior Secondary School, Mr. Remi Adelabu

ADMINISTRATION OF THE SCHOOL

The operation and management of the School was handed over to the Old Boys, under the leadership of Dr Wale Babalakin, President of the Old Boys Association and Chairman of the Board of Trustees by the Oyo State Government led by His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde on 28th September, 2022.

GCI is now revamped and managed by the Old Boys Association of the School, with a view to bringing the School to its past glory, making it the topmost School for Boys not only in Oyo State, but in Nigeria.

GCI is supported actively by the Old Boys and the Oyo State Government. Support also comes from the Parent Teachers Association.

The School Anthem

School of our pride built on the rock
By order, justice and fairplay ruled
May what we dare to learn from thee in youth
Be our guidelight throughout our lives
Refrain: School of our pride we build on thee

Service to others not to self
Consideration for our Nation first
By our examples and not by precept
Show honest labours dignity
Refrain: School of our pride we build on thee

Generations shall come and go
But our pride in you will for aye remain
Maybe not in the confines of your walls
But in Alumni world-renowned
Refrain: School of our pride we build on thee
